چکیده

Thank you for your letter of June 23, 2017 regarding our manuscript entitled “Effects of lubrication on air-sealing performance of a pediatric cuffed tracheal tube” and valuable comments from the reviewers. According to the comment, we have conducted the additional experiments using 5 more tracheal tubes with ID 5.0 mm and we found that the results with the additional samples were very similar to those of the original experiments. We have added these results and revised the manuscript. I attach here both our revised manuscript and our point-bypoint response to the reviewers’ comments. We believe that the revised manuscript addresses the comment from reviewer 3 and is suitable for publication in BMC Anesthesiology.

Effects of lubrication on air-sealing performance of a pediatric cuffed tracheal tube

BACKGROUND Lubrication of cuffed tracheal tubes (CTTs) reduces liquid leakage. However, it is not clear how cuff lubrication influences air leakage. We aimed to test the hypothesis that pretreatment with K-Y jelly, a water-soluble lubricant, would improve the air-sealing performance of pediatric CTTs in a model study. METHODS We placed Parker Flex-Tip™ CTT with 4.0- and 5.0-mm internal diamet...

Uncuffed versus Cuffed Endotracheal Tubes

SPA-APA Meeting San Francisco 2007 1 Uncuffed versus Cuffed Endotracheal Tubes Markus Weiss, MD, Zurich, Switzerland During the last five decades, uncuffed tracheal tubes were recommended for routine use in children aged below 8 years. Cuffed tracheal tubes in patients younger than 8 years of age were only exceptionally used for special indications. In the last 10 years a change in clinical pra...

Cuffed tracheal tubes in children - things have changed.

Whether cuffed tubes should be routinely used in infants and small children has been extensively discussed in the past. However, opinions and recommendations were not based on scientific evidence but rather on empiricism. The basic function of a tracheal tube is to provide a reliable connection between the patient’s lung and the bag or ventilator. Ideally, this connection should be leak-proof w...

Measurement of tracheal wall pressure: a comparison of three different in vitro techniques.

We compared three different tracheal wall pressure measuring techniques in vitro. Using a high-volume, low-pressure, cuffed tracheal tube with an internal diameter of 7.5 mm and a model trachea, the pressure difference technique, the wall pressure membrane technique and the microchip sensor probe technique with and without lubrication were studied. Wall pressures were measured after sequential ...
